He was named Kiev in honor of the eldest of the brothers.

Kiev - The Capital Of Ukraine

The 15 centuries of troubled history did not affect the city potential of spirituality and culture. The city grew from one century to another, and today is a wide open window to Europe - a metropolis of eastern orthodoxy and also a city with many industries: food industry, metallurgical, chemical, construction, textiles, etc. Kiev is the largest urban centre, cultural, historical and financial of Ukraine. With a population of approximately 3 million people, the most northern river port on the Dnieper River has been now for 1,000 years the biggest pole of power in the area. For the people of Kiev the greatest pride are the churches in the area of the capital. Kiev - A Port At The Dnieper River

The Dnieper River springs to the west of Moscow and crosses 485 km into the territory of Russia, 595 into Belarus and 1095 km into the territory of Ukraine, ending into the Black Sea. The port of Kiev, Київський Річковий Вокзал, is located on the right side of the Dnieper River, in Podil. The river is navigable 9 months per year. Location of the city, along one of the biggest navigable arteries of Europe has allowed the development of the transport of goods, as well as of the passengers.
Kiev - The Old Center Of Russian Orthodoxy

Vladimir I (958-1015) which expanded the city and laid the foundations of its urban structure had the biggest influence over the evolution of the city. He offered a state religion, the orthodoxy. In short time, Kiev became the religious center of the Russian state, mainly due to its sacred buildings: the Cathedral of St. Sofia, the Cathedral of St. Vladimir, Lavra monastery Pecerska (founded in 1051, the oldest Russian monastery).
From Kiev began the Russian Orthodox culture. In fact, one should not miss in Kiev the Lavra Pecerska which was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Lavra lies on two green hills on the right side of the Dnieper River (the third largest river of Europe - after the Danube and Volga). Lavra ensemble occupies an area of 28 ha and includes over 100 buildings. Between 1569 and 1667 Kiev belonged to Poland.
